Bacteria in the mouth lead to bad breath and gum disease, and doctors stress that none of these symptoms should be ignored because they can cause a serious condition that could lead to death, according to a report published by the British newspaper “Mirror”.
Gum disease, in particular, can become very serious if left untreated and cause heart and circulatory disease that can lead to death, but the good news is that serious consequences can be prevented through lifestyle changes.
According to the BHF, this condition alone causes around 100,000 hospital admissions each year for heart attacks – an average of one every five minutes in the UK.
Doctors say that chest pain, stomach pain, feeling sick and feeling sweaty are also signs of heart disease, and should be checked and not ignored.
Dr Caroline Hegazy, from the University of Aberdeen, said: “It’s completely normal and healthy to have bacteria in the mouth. But what some people don’t understand is how it can go from completely harmless ‘good’ bacteria to bacteria that cause gum disease and are linked to heart attacks.”
A report by the British Heart Foundation states that some bacteria in the mouth can go bad and infect the gums, causing inflammation and bleeding. And she warned that if left untreated, this could cause inflammation of the parts that connect the teeth to the underlying bone. Heart disease is also linked to gum health, so you should consult a doctor about suffering from bleeding gums.
