The American club, Inter Miami, appointed Argentine Gerardo Martino as its coach, on Wednesday, prior to the arrival of his compatriot, star Lionel Messi, after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
Coach Martino, nicknamed “Tata”, previously supervised Messi’s training in Barcelona and the national team, in addition to the Newell’s Old Boys team, where the little “flea” played in his upbringing.
The 60-year-old “Tata” recently coached the Mexico national team, which lost to “Albi Celeste” in the group stage in the World Cup in Qatar last year, on the latter’s path to winning the title, and he previously supervised Atlanta United in the American League and led it to win the title in 2018.
“We are very happy to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We feel he is a coach who matches our ambitions as a club and we are optimistic about what we can achieve together,” said managing director of Inter Miami, billionaire businessman Jorge Mas.
He continued, “Tata trained at the highest levels and we believe that the experience will be of great benefit to us as we aim to compete for titles.”
Messi and Martino
And Messi announced earlier this month that he would join Inter Miami, which is co-owned by former English soccer star David Beckham, after his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain, France, following the expiration of his contract, two years after leaving Catalonia.
Inter Miami is also awaiting the arrival of Messi’s former colleague in Barcelona, Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets.
For his part, Martino said: “I am very excited to join a big club like Inter Miami and I know that together we can achieve many great things.”
He continued, “The club has the necessary infrastructure to be a major competitor in the league, and I believe that with everyone’s hard work and commitment, we can achieve this.”
Martino left his mark in the world of coaching with the Paraguay national team, after he led it to second place in the Copa America competition in 2011. After his brilliance with Newell’s, success was not his ally with Barcelona, where he spent the 2013-2014 season before taking over the technical duties in his country for two years (2014-2014). 2016), and then moved to Atlanta in 2016.
