The dog contest is back. Instead of displaying beauty, this contest seeks the ugliest dog in the world.
A 7-year-old Chinese crested dog named Scooter won the world’s ugliest dog contest. He won the contest because he has a number of things that are rarely owned by dogs in general. Like, legs that are almost upside down, an almost bald body, so that there are fine white hairs on the head.
However, it is this uniqueness that makes this dog favored by the judges in the World’s Ugliest Dog contest held in Petaluma, California. Scooter managed to bring home the grand prize on Friday (23/6).
Reported from NPR, Thursday (29/6/2023), this event has been going on for almost 50 years. However, the aim of this activity is not to insult dogs, but to show that every dog is unique, and celebrate the imperfections that make each dog special.
“From the moment he sits his little hairless legs and hind legs in your lap, you feel the warmth and strength that can be hugged to change the meaning of the word ugly,” NBC host Gadi Schwartz, one of the judges on the competition, said in an interview. with Today.
“In the funniest way, she reminds me of a furry hippo,” another judge, Catherine Liang, told The New York Times.
According to Scooter’s biography on the contest website, Scooter, who has won the title, had a sad life. He almost faced death because of the disorder he had. He was born with two deformed hind legs which hindered his ability to walk.
Scooter was rescued by a volunteer from the rescue group Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) after a rancher took him to an animal shelter in Tuscon, Arizona.
“He knew that this pup might have the chance to find a good home and a fairly normal life, with the support of our rescue group,” the bio reads.
Until finally Scooter was adopted by Linda Elmquist about seven months ago from a man from the rescue group, it was reported Today.
When the 7-year-old pup gets tired of having to walk on his forelegs, Scooter will support himself with his butt, ‘which he uses as a tripod’ according to his biography.
Scooter recently got a new stroller to help with mobility. He can now walk around the park like any other dog. As well as he can also welcome other animals or humans with outstretched arms.
Uniquely, when the wheels are not moving, Scooter can do what most dogs cannot, for example, walk while balancing on his two front legs.
