Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that an alleged Russian agent involved in the recent attack on the city of Kramatorsk will be charged with treason. Zelensky stated that those who assist Russia in destroying lives deserve the “maximum penalty”. The missile strike on a popular restaurant in Kramatorsk on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of eleven people, including three teenagers. Ukrainian security services have revealed that the suspect sent video footage of the restaurant to the Russian military prior to the attack.
Among the victims were 14-year-old twin sisters Yuliya and Anna Aksenchenko, as well as a 17-year-old girl. The Kramatorsk city council’s education department expressed their grief, stating that “Russian missiles stopped the beating of the hearts of two angels”. Over 60 others were injured in the attack, including Colombian nationals and a prominent Ukrainian writer.
The Ukrainian security services released a photo of the arrested suspect, describing him as a Russian agent. President Zelensky explained that the country’s security services collaborated with police special forces to apprehend the suspect, who could potentially face life imprisonment. Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, according to emergency services.
Kramatorsk, located in the Donetsk region, is under Ukrainian control but is in close proximity to Russian-occupied areas. Last year, the city experienced a missile strike on a train station that resulted in the deaths of over 50 people. The targeted restaurant, Ria lounge, was a popular venue frequented by international journalists, volunteers, and Ukrainian soldiers taking a break from the nearby front lines.
Sergio Jaramillo Caro, a former Colombian peace negotiator, was present in the restaurant during the attack and sustained minor injuries. He described the aftermath of the explosion, recounting how he saw “particles moving in slow motion” as he tried to comprehend the situation. A leading Ukrainian writer who was also present is currently in critical condition and fighting for her life.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned Russia’s attack on “defenceless” Colombians, stating that it violated war protocols. He instructed his foreign ministry to deliver a diplomatic note of protest. Valentyna, a Kramatorsk resident who owns a cafe near the site, described the extensive damage caused by the attack, noting that all the glass, windows, and doors were destroyed.
The Kremlin has once again claimed that their strikes are solely aimed at military targets. Russia’s defense ministry asserted that they had destroyed a “temporary deployment of [Ukrainian] commanders” in Kramatorsk without providing further details. Yuri Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense ministry, informed the BBC that Ukraine’s air defenses are currently insufficient to cover the entire territory. Ukraine continues to request modern fighter jets from its allies to aid in defending against Russian strikes.
Last month, the US pledged support to Ukraine by allowing Western allies to supply American-made F16s and by providing training to Ukrainian pilots for operating the jets. The situation in Ukraine remains tense as the country grapples with ongoing attacks from Russia.
