This is where you end up

At RIVM, we work together with more than 2300 colleagues every day on the possible concerns of tomorrow. You will end up in our Virology department of the Vaccination Program. We work here with about 21 colleagues on diagnostics, laboratory surveillance and specific research into the important infections against which vaccination is carried out in the National Immunization Programme.

The department is working on measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), hepatitis B, human papillomavirus and poliovirus/enterovirus at culture, molecular and immunological level. We are involved with the department in discussions about current and future vaccination policy and we conduct supporting research, including during outbreaks. We often work together with epidemiologists, immunologists and clinicians at home and abroad.

You will do this

You perform supporting and in-depth laboratory research for the national enterovirus, hepatitis B and MMR surveillance. You use state-of-the-art molecular techniques. You also contribute to the innovation of research methods and their validation. You mainly work within our accredited laboratory, which is an ISO15189 accreditation, but part of your work takes place within the WHO Specialized Reference Laboratory for Polio of the RIVM.

Specifically, these are your duties:

You independently conduct supporting and in-depth research. You support your colleagues in research aimed at improving insights into the prevention of viral infections within the surveillance programs; You will use the following laboratory techniques, among others: real-time PCR techniques, and sequencing, such as Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing, and the associated analysis techniques such as phylogeny; You are jointly responsible for the archiving, quality and maintenance of the virus collection; You also contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of our tests within the applicable quality system (ISO 15189).

At our labs you come into contact with many different techniques. The work of RIVM is dynamic and constantly changing. There are always developments in the field of medical research and that requires some flexibility from you, but also makes the work varied and always up-to-date.

We are dealing with innovative and challenging research questions that you will not encounter anywhere else, which also applies to this position. In addition, our independent, scientific position makes us an important player in social discussions. Many of our end products are part of political and policy decision-making. It is an interesting time to work at RIVM.

We work a lot as a team and our department is a cozy club, with a lot of interaction. We also regularly have international guests, which brings with it the necessary dynamics.

What are you bringing

We are looking for a colleague who can work well independently, but also in a team. You have good communication skills and are pragmatic. The nature of the work requires you to work accurately and to be able to plan and organize well.

We also ask:

A completed HLO training in medical microbiology or molecular biology; You have experience in the field of general virological diagnostic techniques, such as cell and virus culture and molecular techniques such as PCR, Sanger /NGS sequencing and real-time PCR techniques. You also like to stay informed of developments in the field; You have experience with processing and organizing research data in different systems; You have experience and affinity with working under a quality system (ISO 15189); You have good oral and written expression skills in Dutch and English.

In addition to the salary, you will receive an Individual Choice Budget (IKB). The SCV consists of money (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time.
