Despite a below-expected performance on Tuesday night, the 27th, Fluminense secured a place in the round of 16 of the Libertadores. That’s because Tricolor drew 1-1 with Sporting Cristal at Maracanã, for the last round of Group D of the competition. Cano scored the goal for the Rio de Janeiro team, and Brenner scored for the Peruvians.

With the result, Flu reached ten points and confirmed the first place in the group. River Plate, which also won in the round, arrived in the same situation, but is worse off in the tiebreaker criteria and advances as second.

Now, Flu becomes the key to the Brazilian Championship. Fernando Diniz’s team returns to the field next Saturday, at 4 pm, to face São Paulo at Morumbi. The match is valid for the 13th round of the competition.

THE GAME

Fluminense saw Sporting Cristal, sometimes, advance the marking to disturb the ball exit. In this scenario, even at the beginning of the match, Tricolor had a scare, as the Peruvian team managed to regain possession and had an opportunity inside the area, but the kick went wide.

As time went by, Flu began to enter the match more and counted on Cano’s talent to open the scoring at Maracanã. In the 22nd minute, Keno sped off on the right and turned the game around for the attacker, who was at the edge of the area. The number 14 dominated and finished strong and low in the right corner of goalkeeper Renato Solís, without any chance of defense.

After that, the match seemed under control, with Fluminense better, but Sporting Cristal had the ball in the area to get back into the game. At 33, Alejandro Hohberg went to the corner kick and crossed the area. Brenner rose higher than everyone else to head the ball and leave everything equal on the scoreboard. Before going to the break, Tricolor tried to regain the advantage and even sent a ball to the crossbar, but failed to score.

In the second half, Sporting Cristal came back better and put pressure on Flu. The Peruvians, however, were unable to take advantage of the good moment and only managed to pose danger once.

Fluminense, on the other hand, only entered around the second half of the complementary stage. From then on, Tricolor managed to touch the ball more and even had two good chances, with headers from Arias and Germán Cano.

The Peruvian team even scared Flu again in the final stretch, but didn’t score. Thus, Fluminense confirmed the place in the round of 16.
