Chimpanzee Sees the Sky for the First Time After 28 Years in a Laboratory

FLORIDA – Like a science fiction movie where a human arrives on an alien planet, a video captured the emotional reaction of a chimpanzee who saw the sky for the first time after 28 years in a laboratory.

In the video, posted by the chimpanzee sanctuary Save the Chimps, the monkey, named “Vanilla,” is seen emerging from her cage and turning to face the sun for the first time in her 28-year life.

In the video you can also see how another rescued chimpanzee, named Dwight, cheers her on and welcomes her after going outside.

“She had never been out of a lab cage or a room bigger than a garage,” a Save the Chimps spokesperson told WFLA. Her lab cage was no more than five square feet.

Save the Chimps added that Vanilla had been rescued from a laboratory in New York in 1997, but was later transferred to a sanctuary in California where she was locked in another cage with no light or access to the outside.

Vanilla is one of 18 chimpanzees living in the wild, located at her sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida. Total, the Save the Chimps sanctuary cares for about 220 animals.
