The airport association ACI has published its barometer for the air traffic connections of important European markets and the major hubs worldwide.
According to the latest edition of the “Airport Industry Connectivity Report”, the recovery pattern after the pandemic is characterized by various influences that have different effects on national markets and also individual airports.
The overall connectivity in Europe was not restored more than three years after the outbreak of the pandemic. However, according to the latest analysis, there are significant differences between direct and indirect connectivity.
According to ACI, direct connectivity is almost restored at minus four percent, but indirect connectivity at minus 22 and hub connectivity at minus 25 percent are far from restored.
Connectivity lags behind passenger recovery
According to the ACI, overall European air traffic connectivity is still 16 percent below pre-pandemic levels. A direct comparison with the recovery in passenger traffic shows that connectivity is lagging behind.
The number of passengers has already recovered in many places and is currently around 92 percent of what it was before the pandemic. When passenger numbers recover, however, leisure and VFR traffic in particular are at the center of demand. This allows low-cost airlines to expand while full-service carriers are slow to recover.
The fact that low-cost airlines are also holding back in Germany can be seen not only in the number of passengers, but also in the level of connectivity. Here, Germany brings up the rear with -27 percent among the larger markets in the extended EU region.
Turkey (+19 percent), Cyprus (+17 percent), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+8 percent), Albania (+7 percent) and Greece (+4 percent), on the other hand, can report more connectivity than before Corona, while countries like Spain (-12 percent), followed by Italy (-16 percent) and France (-17 percent) lost connectivity.

Among the larger EU+ markets, the United Kingdom comes out on top with minus ten percent. Other markets such as Finland (-40 percent) are far from regaining their connectivity level due to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Frankfurt remains “Number 1” for hub connectivity
Frankfurt Airport, meanwhile, continues to be “Number 1” for hub connectivity, even though hub connectivity levels are still 23 percent below pre-pandemic (2019) levels. The largest German airport is ahead of Istanbul (+31 percent) and Dallas Fort Worth (-19 percent).

Besides Istanbul, only a few smaller and specialized hubs have managed to surpass their pre-pandemic hub connectivity levels: Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen (+37 percent), Athens (+33 percent), Lisbon (+4 percent) and Dublin (+ 3%).
Helsinki (-61 percent) and Rome-Fiumicino (-60 percent) have both seen dramatic declines in their hub connectivity levels since the pandemic – consequences of the war in Ukraine disrupting Finnair’s Asia-focused network and the replacement of Alitalia by the smaller Ita Airways.
Stockholm-Arlanda (-54 percent), Warsaw (-43 percent), Brussels (-40 percent) and Munich (-37 percent) have also seen significant drops in hub connectivity levels, according to the ACI Connectivity Barometer.
