Gustav Klimt’s ‘Lady with a Fan’ has left the auction for 86,092,340 euros, setting a new record for the most expensive painting ever sold in Europe.

Dame mit Fächer” (“Lady with a Fan”) has gone down in history. A painting by the Austrian modernist artist Gustav Klimt has sold at Sotheby’s for £74 million (86,092,340 euros), setting a new record for the most expensive painting ever sold in Europe.

The sentences followed one after the other with dizzying speed, maintaining tension until the very end. It is not yet known who acquired the painting, which has been in the hands of the same family for the last 29 years.

“Lady with a Fan” is considered one of Klimt’s best works and is supposed to be the last portrait of his career. He wrote it in 1917-1918, a few months before his unexpected death at the age of 55.

Prior to this, the most expensive piece of art ever auctioned in Europe was Walking Man I, a bronze sculpture by Alberto Giacometti that sold for £65m (€76m).
