Lady with a Fan: Gustav Klimt’s Final Masterpiece Sets Auction Record in Europe

The painting Lady with a fan was auctioned in London on Tuesday for 85.3 million pounds (converted to 99.2 million euros). Never before has a work of art raised more at an auction in Europe.

Lady with a fan (Woman with fan) was the last work of the famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. The work was found in his studio after his death in 1918.

The British auction house Sotheby’s estimated the value of the painting at around 75 million euros. That price was further boosted by a battle between four bidders. The painting eventually went to an anonymous Hong Kong collector, Sotheby’s reports.

The amount that is now being paid is considerably higher than the previous European auction record. That was in Alberto Giacometti’s name The Walking Man I (Running man i). That work fetched 65 million pounds (at the time about 79 million euros) in 2010, also at a Sotheby’s auction in London.

Klimt’s paintings are often auctioned for astronomical sums. Last year delivered his work Birch Forest converted 95 million euros at an auction in New York.
