Manchester City, the champions of the treble last season, announced on Tuesday the signing of Croatian international midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea.
“Manchester City has completed the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea on a four-year contract,” the club said in a statement.
He added, “The 29-year-old player played 221 matches in five seasons with Chelsea and won the Champions League, European League (Europa League), Club World Cup and European Super Cup, in addition to being named player of the year for his club in the 2019-2020 season.”
English newspapers revealed that the value of the deal amounted to about $32 million.
The contract with Kovacic comes to compensate for the absence of German Ilkay Gundogan, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer deal a few days ago, with the expiration of his contract with City.
