Botic van de Zandschulp’s Wimbledon Preparations Hindered by Sixth Consecutive Loss in Eastbourne

Botic van de Zandschulp lost for the sixth time in a row on Tuesday in Eastbourne, England. The ninth-placed Dutchman was no match for the Swede Mikael Ymer in the opening round. It was his last match for Wimbledon.

Van de Zandschulp (ATP-42) started well by taking the opening set, but then had to acknowledge his superior in Ymer. It became 6-3, 4-6 and 6-2 for the global number 61 from Sweden. The party lasted more than two hours.

Earlier this year, Van de Zandschulp had beaten Ymer on the hard court of Dubai. Then the roles were reversed: our compatriot won two sets in a row after losing the opening set.

In Eastbourne, Van de Zandschulp played his second grass match of 2023. A week ago he started his grass season with a defeat at Queen’s. He could not stunt against the American Frances Tiafoe in the first round.

Van de Zandschulp has not won since April 22

That match meant his comeback for Van de Zandschulp after a foot injury. Due to that injury, the 27-year-old Dutchman had to skip the Rosmalen grass tournament, among other things.

Before his injury, Van de Zandschulp was already on a disappointing series. He immediately crashed in Munich, Madrid, Rome and at Roland Garros. Then followed his defeat at Queen’s and at Eastbourne.

Van de Zandschulp, like his colleagues, is preparing for Wimbledon. The third Grand Slam tournament of the year starts next Monday. Last year, Van de Zandschulp reached the fourth round.
