New company introduces unique approach to sustainably produced, cell-cultured meat.
Omeat Technology was originally conceived and developed four years ago by TIBI scientists led by TIBI Director and CEO Ali Khademhosseini, Ph.D., a world-renowned tissue engineer. Striving to find solutions to critical health and environmental challenges, the interdisciplinary Terasaki Institute used its expertise in tissue engineering and cell culture techniques to develop major innovations in cultured meat technology. These include using unique microcarriers for cell culture differentiation and using an alternative to fetal bovine serum in their growth media that is far cheaper, more readily available and easier to manufacture.
These innovations address some of the biggest challenges of traditional beef production, which is currently carried out at a very detrimental environmental cost. Studies have shown that alternative meat sources, such as Meat grown from animal cells, for example, produces 92% less greenhouse gas emissions and 93% less air pollution, and uses up to 95% less land and 78% less water than traditional meat production methods.
Omeat has gone a step further by establishing a sustainably managed farm with herds of free-range cows as the organic source for its meat production, further reducing its environmental footprint. Omeat is also working to improve scalability to reduce costs and further minimize resources as the company brings more products to market.
“Our first spinout company is on track to succeed and meet both environmental and consumer needs in a game-changing way,” said Dr. Khademhosseini. “We hope that with our diverse research platforms at TIBI, we can generate more spinout companies that address the biggest health and environmental challenges.”
Omeat is currently setting up a pilot plant and expanding its team. In parallel, the company is in direct discussions with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to obtain approval for its cultivated products.
