The Fatal Parking Space Dispute: Trial Begins for Murder in Hérault Assize Court

A 33-year-old man appeared on Monday before the Hérault Assize Court. He is suspected of having killed a 43-year-old neighbor with a bullet in the chest, for a benign dispute: the two men had argued for a parking space on August 1, 2019, in Béziers.

It was after long months of investigation that the man suspected of having opened fire was found in Girona, Spain, where he had fled. Four of the five people suspected of having helped him in his escape are also being prosecuted, the fifth having died in the meantime.

Who fired first?

The accused had just served a four-year prison sentence for drug trafficking. His criminal record carries five convictions, for aggravated violence, carrying a category six weapon and traffic offences. The victim also had a long criminal record.

According to the accused, the victim shot him and he only defended himself, which the civil parties refute. The verdict of the jurors is expected on Friday.
