Annoyed Woman Forced to Tip at Self-Service Convenience Store

Woman Annoyed After Being Asked to Tip at Self-Service Convenience Store

Jakarta – This woman was annoyed after being ‘guided’ to pay tips while shopping at a convenience store. Because, when she shopped, she chose a self-service option. Giving tips to Umrah is done in the United States (US). However, this woman did not expect that this habit would carry over to the self-service system.

Reported from Dailystar, Monday (6/26/2023), the incident occurred at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey recently. A user on Reddit with the account @mildyinfurianting shared a photo of a self-service screen.

In the photo, it can be seen that the person bought a bottle of coconut water and a pack of Caesar chicken. They said the food was terrible. In addition, the price of the food they bought was quite high, and they were also charged a Terminal Act Fee of 3% and other additions to taxes.

The photo also shows an independent cashier screen that gives a choice of tips with tip percentages from 15 percent to 20 percent. The most expensive tip percentage option adds a fee of USD 4.28 or around IDR 64 thousand for an order of 23 USD or around IDR 345 thousand.

The request for a tip left Reddit users confused. One even asked, who was the tip actually for? “This is so annoying considering how expensive everything is at the airport. Then they have the audacity to ask for a tip,” wrote one user.

“This is getting out of hand, I think we need a law mandating the no-tip option and prohibiting the automatic addition of tips to bills,” said another.

“I would give them a negative tip if I could, this is annoying,” said an annoyed user.

A managing spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that tips given at the self-serve cash register are collected and given to staff working the shift. “It has always been our goal to create a rewarding experience for our guests, while looking after our crew members and the option to leave a tip if you have received assistance,” the spokesperson said.

Some time ago, Reuters technology correspondent, Anna Tong, also experienced the same thing. She shared a screenshot of the tip when she bought food and also vented via her Twitter. “I’m at Newark Airport and asked to provide a tip for a self-pay transaction, how much do I need to provide?” she said.

Tipping is a common practice in the United States (US), usually done in restaurants or for services rendered by waitstaff or delivery drivers. However, tipping at a self-service convenience store was something the woman did not expect.

The incident took place at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The woman voiced her annoyance on Reddit, sparking a discussion among users about the appropriateness of tipping in a self-service setting.

While tipping is often seen as a form of appreciation for good service, some argued that it should not be expected in a self-service scenario. They expressed their frustration at the expectation of tipping becoming increasingly prevalent in various situations.

This incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding tipping culture in the US, and how it continues to evolve and extend to unexpected settings. The woman’s annoyance serves as a reminder that tipping practices can vary and may not always align with one’s expectations.

  1. This article perfectly captures the frustration felt by many customers when faced with the expectation of tipping at a self-service convenience store. It’s increasingly difficult to justify such a practice when the primary purpose of these stores is convenience, not customer service.
