Between Manes and Colors: The Equestrian Art Collection Book by Raquel Fernandes

Equestrian artist Raquel Fernandes, from Belo Horizonte, is celebrating 10 years since she made a career change from being a veterinary doctor specializing in equines to becoming an artist. Her artwork primarily focuses on horses, with hundreds of works completed over the past decade. Notably, she has reinterpreted famous works by artists such as Tarsila do Amaral, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Gustav Klimt, incorporating horses as the main figures. Now, Fernandes plans to compile these great works into a collection book titled “Between Manes and Colors,” which explores the magical connection between horses and art.

In an interview with Portal Cavalus, Fernandes explained her motivation behind the book. She aims to highlight the importance of horses as partners in humanity and hopes to bring people closer to the world of art. Fernandes believes that Brazil is distant from this artistic universe and intends to showcase the evolution of this culture through the pages of her book. She also emphasized that her reinterpretations do not humanize the horses but rather depict them as part of her own history and our reality. For example, she used the Olympic champion Valegro in her reimagining of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Baloubet, the only gold medalist in Brazilian Equestrianism with Rodrigo Pessoa, in her interpretation of Gustav Klimt’s work.

The idea for the “Entre Crinas e Cores” project, which translates to “Between Manes and Colors,” came about after five years of studying and creating these reinterpretations. Fernandes has gathered around 35 works for the book, which will also include photos of the artists who inspired her and accompanying texts. The book aims to take readers on a delightful journey through art, with horses as the main characters.

To make the book a reality, Fernandes turned to crowdfunding through the Catarse website. The project is a pre-sale of the book, which features a hardcover and color photos. Fernandes expressed her gratitude for the virtual crowdfunding platform, as it allows her to bring her work with horses closer to people who appreciate art.

Fernandes has always had a connection with art, thanks to her upbringing in an inspiring environment where both her father and mother had connections to the art world. However, she never imagined becoming an equestrian visual artist until she decided to change paths from her veterinary career. Encouraged by friends who saw her talent for drawing, Fernandes pursued art full-time, studying and improving her technique. Today, she exclusively earns a living through her paintings, which include commissioned realistic horse portraits, stylized pieces, and illustrations for horse-related books.

The “Entre Crinas e Cores” project is currently seeking support on Catarse, and interested individuals can contribute through the provided link. Raquel Fernandes’ journey as an equestrian artist showcases the power of following one’s passion and the beauty of combining art with the majestic world of horses.
