Formula E is set to make history this Sunday as electric single-seaters take to the Portland International Raceway for the first time ever. The track, which has previously hosted other single-seater races like IndyCar, features many straight lines that allow for high speeds.
In the first free practice session, René Rast of McLaren stood out by beating the previous record for the fastest average speed over one lap in Formula E history. The record was previously held by Sacha Fenestraz of Nissan with an average speed of 135.324 km/h. Rast’s performance in Monaco, where the record was achieved, was erased due to the Habs’ turn. However, the average speed of Rast’s lap in Portland has not been revealed by Formula E.
The historic day continued with Edoardo Mortara of Maserati completing the first lap in Formula E history with an average speed of 100 mph or 160.934 km/h. But the records didn’t stop there, as Jaguar drivers Sam Bird and Mitch Evans achieved two more impressive feats.
Bird became the first driver in Formula E history to reach a speed of 275 km/h, while his teammate Evans surpassed him with a peak speed of 276.6 km/h. These speeds have never been seen before in the championship.
At the end of the session, René Rast set the best time with a lap time of 1’09″054. Jean-Eric Vergne of DS Penske and Dan Ticktum of NIO 333 Racing completed the Top 3.
