The Office of the General Prosecutor’s Office for Non-Prosecution Proceedings has recently conducted an investigation into the illegal cutting of trees in several cities and regions of Azerbaijan. The cities of Baku and Sumgayit, as well as the Absheron, Samukh, Gusar, and Barda regions, were all found to be affected by this illegal activity.

According to the press service of the institution, a total of 2,254 trees and bushes, which are not included in the forest fund, were illegally felled during the investigations. The areas affected include Hospitalkhanayan Street in the Sabunchu District of Baku, Zeytun Street in the Khatai District, the 13th Microdistrict of Sumgayit City, the 28th Quarter of Khyrdalan City, Sarkar and Karagagli villages in the Samukh District, Yasab Village in the Gusar District, and Lanbaran and Khanarab Villages in the Barda District.

Furthermore, it was discovered that the Barda Regional Forestry Center of the Forestry Development Service under ETSN had included a total of 2,254 trees and bushes in the forest fund, causing significant damage to nature. The estimated cost of the damage is more than 76,000 manat.

In response to these findings, criminal cases have been initiated under Articles 259.1, 259.2.4, and 259.3 of the Criminal Code. These articles pertain to the illegal cutting of trees by a group of individuals who colluded in advance, resulting in significant damage. The cases have been forwarded to the relevant internal affairs bodies for further investigation.
