Hannibal Gaddafi’s Health Deteriorates in Hunger Strike Amidst Detention in Lebanon

Hannibal Gaddafi, the son of the late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi, has been admitted to the hospital due to his deteriorating health condition. Reports indicate that he is suffering from severe infections in the spine and hypotension as a result of his hunger strike.

Gaddafi was transferred to Hotel Dieu Hospital in Ashrafieh after his health deteriorated. He stayed there for four hours, undergoing necessary medical examinations under the supervision of a team of doctors and nurses. A specialized doctor is now supervising his treatment inside his cell in the Information Branch of the Internal Security Forces building, and his condition is said to be stable.

Since June 3rd, Gaddafi has been on an open hunger strike to protest against the Lebanese judiciary’s continued detention of him for eight years. This move has brought his case back into the spotlight. He is only drinking water to take medicine.

In December 2023, Gaddafi completed eight years in prison in Lebanon for the crime of concealing information in the case of the unseen Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions. They disappeared in Libya in 1978. Gaddafi was arrested in December 2015 when he was a “political refugee” in Syria and was later handed over to the Lebanese services after being kidnapped.

Throughout these years, Gaddafi has not provided any new information about the fate of Imam Musa al-Sadr and his companions. The judicial investigator has not yet issued an indictment. Gaddafi is currently held in a small cell in the Information Branch prison at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces, and only his agent is allowed to visit him.

The defense team holds the Lebanese authorities responsible for Gaddafi’s life, as they insist on continuing his detention without trial in a case in which he has no interest. Despite his health conditions, there has been no official Lebanese comment on his arrest, the deterioration of his health, and his transfer to the hospital.

The file of Gaddafi’s son remains without a judicial settlement, despite attempts by several Libyan parties to intervene for his release. Negotiations have taken place between his defense team and the committee in charge of the al-Sadr case.
