International Widows Day: Shining a Light on the Plight of Widows in Poverty and Injustice

Today is International Widows Day. The day is observed to shed light on the plight of millions of widows living in poverty. Economic struggle is not the only problem to solve, widows around the world also face discrimination or are denied their inheritance rights after losing their husbands.

International Widows Day was first observed in 2005 by The Loomba Foundation. Mrs. Pushpa Vati Loomba, mother of the founder, lost her husband on June 23, 1954. Hence, the foundation was started to create awareness about widows living in poverty around the world.

The day highlights all the social stigmas and financial struggles that many women face after becoming a widow. It is a day recognized by the United Nations to address the poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries.

International Widows Day was celebrated for the first time in 2005. The day was first celebrated by Lord Loomba and Foundation President Cheri Blair. On December 21, 2010, the United Nations officially recognized the day as International Widows’ Day. After the International Widows Day in 2010, International Widows Day was also celebrated in countries like Sri Lanka, USA, UK, Nepal, Syria, Kenya, India and Bangladesh.

Every year the United Nations introduces new resolutions to raise awareness of the plight of widows in the global community. The theme of International Widows Day 2023 is ‘Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’.

The day provides an opportunity for measures to ensure full rights and recognition for widows. It is also a day to create awareness about widows getting a fair share of their rights and land. The day emphasizes on guaranteeing widows pensions, social protection, decent work and equal pay.
