BNNVARA Quits Op1 Due to Conflict: Unsafe Working Environment and Dissatisfaction with Leadership

BNNVARA has announced that it will be stepping down from the talk show Op1 due to a conflict between WNL editor-in-chief Bert Huisjes and BNNVARA editor-in-chief Rachel Franse. The decision comes after reports of an unsafe working environment, according to de Volkskrant.

The dissatisfaction with Huisjes’ leadership has been ongoing for some time, with Franse leaving the program last week after four years, citing a “personally unsafe working environment” caused by Huisjes. BNNVARA suggested that Huisjes should relinquish his position in the partnership, which includes Omroep MAX and EO in addition to WNL and BNNVARA, but this did not happen.

BNNVARA has also stated that Huisjes is not willing to investigate the working atmosphere. Huisjes, on the other hand, claims that all Op1 employees were made aware of the opportunity to share their experiences with the Van Rijn committee, which is currently investigating transgressive behavior within the NPO and in Hilversum.

In addition to the conflict between Huisjes and Franse, there have been discussions among the other broadcasters of Op1 about a different editorial structure. The sources report that Huisjes has too much influence over the choice of subjects, and the various editors want this to change in order to express a more unique sound.

BNNVARA’s decision to step down from Op1 as of August was announced on Wednesday, citing a “difference of opinion about the management and content of the program.” The exact reason for the disagreement was not disclosed.

It is currently unclear how Op1 will be completed on Friday nights from August onwards, as BNNVARA is still responsible for the show. Natasja Gibbs and Amber Kortzorg currently present the talk show on behalf of BNNVARA.
