Naked stories, violence, and women were the prevailing themes of the past theater season, according to the jury of the “Gamer’s Night” awards. On June 21, the jury announced the applicants for the awards in 15 categories, describing the season as more contrasting and interesting than the previous one.
Tom Chever, the head of the jury, highlighted three main criteria used to evaluate the performances: innovation and courage, iron professionalism, and social relevance. Unlike the previous year, where one performance stood out as a clear leader, this season had several high-quality achievements that left an impression.
Kitija Balcare, a jury representative, expressed her personal criteria for a good show, stating that it should be one that the audience wants to see again. While there weren’t many shows that met this criteria, Balcare believes that some of the nominated performances have the potential to be the best.
The season was characterized by “naked stories,” which featured elements of documentary theater reflecting social reality. Additionally, two other themes emerged prominently – violence, particularly domestic violence, and the question of women in the 21st century. Several performances focused on exploring self-determination and self-awareness through theatrical language.
Dace Bonāte, another jury representative, praised the inclusion of these thought-provoking themes, which she believes are important and relevant to the current time. However, she also noted a tendency for theater to no longer serve as a refuge from reality, which may leave some audience members dissatisfied. Bonāte emphasized the need for life-affirming and encouraging performances.
The Valmiera theater received the most nominations this year and stood out in the “young stage artist of the year” category. Despite the lack of resources, the Valmiera theater has maintained its creative momentum and ability, according to Chevers. The Fine Arts Theater also had a bright season, but Bonāte expressed a desire for a deeper layer of content. She believes that even with fewer technical possibilities, Valmiera can raise the level of performances and promote their quality.
The Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater was also highlighted for its repertoire, particularly the production “With ball shoes in the Siberian snow,” which offered a fresh medium of expression.
