Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has officially announced the introduction of the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on the Samsung Health Monitor application. This feature will be available in 13 countries starting in the middle of this year.
The IHRN feature, along with the existing blood pressure and Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring capabilities, will have the ability to detect heartbeats that may lead to atrial fibrillation (AFib). The aim is to provide Galaxy Watch users with a more comprehensive understanding of their heart health.
The MFSD (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety) in South Korea approved the IHRN feature last week, following permission from the FDA (the US food and drug regulatory agency). The feature will be introduced in 13 countries, including Argentina, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama, the UAE, the United States, and South Korea.
In addition to the on-demand ECG monitoring function, the IHRN feature will monitor irregular heartbeats in the background of the application and alert users to potential AFib. Combined with the existing blood pressure and heart rate monitoring, users can gain deeper insights into their cardiovascular health.
Since its launch in 2020, the Samsung Health Monitor app has expanded its reach to 74 countries worldwide. Over 15 million Galaxy Watch users have utilized the app to track blood pressure and ECG directly from their wrists, enabling them to have a better understanding of their heart health by continuously monitoring and recording blood pressure and heart rhythm.
Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business, Samsung Electronics, emphasized that heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally. Samsung is committed to supporting users in staying informed about their heart health by providing various monitoring tools, including blood pressure measurements and notifications for irregular heartbeats.
Pak stated, “We will also continue to look for new ways to help Galaxy Watch users gain deeper insights into their health and fitness easily, both day and night.”
The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature will be available for upcoming Galaxy Watch devices that will be launched later this year as part of the latest One UI 5 Watch presence. It will then be gradually expanded to previous models.
