Former Mechanic Jack Audier Passes Away After Battle with Cancer
Chartres, France – Jack Audier, a well-known former mechanic, passed away on Friday after a long battle with cancer. His son, Clément, shared that doctors had initially given him only six months to live, but he fought for a year and a half.
Born in Châteaudun, Audier would have celebrated his 73rd birthday this Sunday. He gained recognition and built his reputation from 1983 to 2017 as the owner of a garage on rue de Reverdy in Chartres, where he specialized in repairing prestigious cars. “He was demanding at work, but always remained human,” Clément fondly remembers.
In a symbolic gesture, Audier’s former apprentice, Grégory, purchased his garage in 2018, carrying on his legacy. This transition marked the end of a remarkable 50-year career in mechanics.
Audier’s passion for motorsport led him to participate in the French rally championships, where he competed against renowned drivers such as Michèle Mouton. He even had the opportunity to be the competitor of Eurélien Jean Todt, who later became a co-pilot.
Not only was Audier a skilled mechanic, but he also served as a co-driver in world rally championship races. He notably partnered with Yves Morize three times in a Range Rover for the Paris-Dakar event, successfully finishing the race twice.
Aside from his professional achievements, Audier was also known for his philanthropic work. He actively supported local charities, including the social association of infant-juvenile psychiatry of Chartres (Aspic). Additionally, he showcased his own Ferrari at the Balades de Chartres event, which he had acquired from former Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa.
Clément Audier shared a recent memory of fulfilling his dream of participating in the Tour de Corse with his father last May. They drove a yellow Alpine A110 with the number 31.
To honor Jack Audier’s life and contributions, a ceremony will be held at Chartres Cathedral on Thursday, June 22, at 2 p.m. Luxury vehicles, both old and modern, are invited to park on the forecourt, reminiscent of the cars Audier repaired throughout his career.
