Tragic Drowning Incident: Two Students Found Dead in Lake Toba

According to witness testimony from RMS (14) and CS (13), the victims and the witnesses were planning to take a bath together at Lake Toba in the Sibandang Island area. Upon reaching the beach, CEM jumped into the lake but struggled to swim, desperately calling for help. AS attempted to assist by extending a hand and holding onto the side of a nearby parked ship.

Tragically, CEM clung onto AS, preventing both of them from moving, and they were swept away by the water. Despite the efforts of local residents, police personnel, and the search and rescue (SAR) team from Parapat, the victims could not be located on the surface of Lake Toba.

The search operation resumed on Monday morning, with the participation of the local community, Muspika Muara, the BPBD of the Taput Regency Government, and the SAR team. Finally, at around 8:30 WIB, the SAR team discovered the lifeless bodies of the two victims. They were found embracing each other, not far from their initial position, in the depths of Lake Toba, estimated to be approximately 11 meters deep.

Ipda B. Gultom, the Head of Public Relations of the Taput Police, confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He revealed that prior to the tragedy, the two students had visited their uncle’s house in Sibandang Village, Muara District, Taput Regency.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for caution when engaging in recreational activities near bodies of water. The local community is deeply saddened by the loss of these young lives and extends their sympathies to the grieving families.

The authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
