DUBAI, 18th June, 2020 (WAM) — Major General / M. Ismail Al Gergawi, President of the Arab and UAE Basketball Federations, confirmed that the Bahraini team, Manama, deservedly deserved the title of the West Asian Super League, which was hosted by Al-Ahly Youth Club in Dubai and concluded its competitions yesterday, “Saturday”.
Manama, crowned with the title, and runner-up Kuwait, qualified for the Asian Championship, while the “BC Astana” team from Kazakhstan ranked third in the tournament.
Al-Gergawi said: Arab and Gulf basketball, in particular, demonstrated its high position at the level of West Asian competitions, and succeeded in securing its place in the 2023 Asian Championship finals. He pointed out that “Manama” presented distinguished levels, crowned with victory over the Kuwait team, which also presented distinguished levels, what It proved that Arab basketball imposed its strong presence in this tournament.
The President of the Arab and Emirati Basketball Federations congratulated Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Bahraini Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Chairman of the Public Authority for Sports and Chairman of the Olympic Committee, on the occasion of Manama winning the championship title.
Al-Gergawi invited the Bahraini teams and clubs to participate, as well as to host the Arab championships organized by the Arab Federation.
He added, “Bahrain basketball has achieved great successes at the Gulf and Asian levels, and its teams enjoy great public support, which helps the success of any tournament hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain.”
Al-Qergawi considered that Shabab Al-Ahly Club was not successful in the tournament due to difficult circumstances it faced before the tournament and affected its results, most notably the forced change of its professionals before the start of the competitions, and the lack of harmony after the return of some of its players from injury.
