Millau Hosts Gravel World Cup: Geoffrey Soupe Takes Victory with Impressive Performance

Sunday Showdown at Millau: Gravel World Cup Attracts Elite Cyclists

Millau, known as the “gravel lands,” once again played host to a thrilling round of the Gravel World Cup. This prestigious event saw the cream of the discipline gather to compete in a challenging race on the causses of Millau. Last year’s champion, unfortunately, couldn’t defend his title due to injury. However, Geoffrey Soupe, a member of the TotalEnergies team, was determined to make his mark and showcase his team’s prowess as the event’s sponsor.

A Battle of Grit and Determination

As the race unfolded, a leading group of approximately fifteen cyclists emerged during the first ascent on the Causse Noir. However, it wasn’t until the 90-kilometer mark that British rider Toby Perry launched a daring attack. Behind him, Soupe, along with Nathan Haas and American Russel Finsterwald, embarked on a relentless pursuit. The positions remained unchanged until the final stretch in the Cazalous area, where Perry crossed the finish line after completing the grueling 146-kilometer race in an impressive time of 4 hours, 34 minutes, and 43 seconds, securing a seven-minute lead over his closest competitors.

Reflecting on his performance, Soupe shared, “Last year, I encountered mechanical issues right from the start. This year, we adopted a more cautious approach, riding in a group and navigating the challenging headwind on the plateau. It was a great experience to be part of a strong group of 15 riders. However, I encountered a puncture at kilometer 90 while chasing the leader. Thankfully, I received assistance after 10 kilometers. In the final climb, which I am familiar with, I battled it out with the other pursuers. It’s a fantastic achievement for the team to secure a podium finish.”

Women’s Category: Carolin Schieff Dominates

In the women’s category, German cyclist Carolin Schieff showcased her dominance, taking control halfway up the challenging Pouncho climb. Meanwhile, Italian rider Virginia Cancellieri led a group of six cyclists, but they were unable to pose a significant threat to Schieff. With an impressive time of 5 hours, 13 minutes, and 20 seconds, Schieff crossed the finish line in first place, securing a well-deserved victory.

Impressive Performances in Other Categories

Alain Prost, a highly anticipated participant, emerged victorious in his category, completing the 101-kilometer race in an impressive time of 4 hours, 35 minutes, and 54 seconds. Julien Absalon, who ventured into the gravel discipline for the first time, finished in the Top 50, completing the challenging 146-kilometer course in 5 hours and 7 minutes. Absalon expressed his excitement, stating, “After specializing in one cycling discipline, I decided to try my hand at others, and this gravel competition marks my debut.”
