Cyclone Biparjoy Forces Massive Evacuation, Threatens Gujarat Coast and Pakistan

More than 75,000 people have been evacuated from the Gujarat region of India’s western coast due to the arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy. It is expected to come ashore from the Arabian Sea on Thursday evening.

On Thursday morning, the cyclone was still 180 kilometers from the port of Jakhau in Gujarat. The Indian Meteorological Department estimates that the wind could reach speeds of 115 to 125 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 140 kilometers per hour.

The weather service warns that the storm could completely destroy temporary houses with thatched roofs. In addition, crops and roads can be seriously damaged.

Pakistan may also be affected by the cyclone. This was located 270 kilometers from the port city of Karachi on Thursday morning.

Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman does not expect Karachi, home to twenty million people, to be in danger. The country has taken measures against heavy wind and rain.
