The Japanese automotive giant Toyota has announced that in the future the electric cars produced by the company will be able to travel 1000 kilometers and more on a single charge. Such a statement in itself is nothing special, because such a driving distance is promised by everyone who is not lazy at some point in the future. Here it is important to understand that such statements signal changes in Toyota itself – if last year the manufacturer looked at the electric car with skepticism, prioritizing the development of hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell cars, then with the changes in the company’s management, the focus has rapidly shifted to the electric car.
If we can believe what Toyota has said, they will achieve significant improvements by integrating new generation batteries and other technologies into their new platforms. Toyota plans to offer a full range of electric car models by 2026, which means that there will be a lot of news and they will come relatively soon.
The Japanese car manufacturer has diverted approximately half of its R&D staff to the development of various technologies related to electric cars, but in May the “Toyota BEV Factory” was opened, where innovations are being worked on specifically in the field of battery technology. Toyota has also copied the innovations of other manufacturers, for example by adopting Tesla’s “gigacasting” technology, which makes it possible to produce a car with a smaller number of parts. This reduces production costs and also the final price.
Although Toyota is obviously trying to jump on the bandwagon, the Japanese manufacturer is not betting all its cards on battery-powered electric cars – Toyota is still continuing to develop hydrogen fuel cell technologies, seeing applications in various transport sectors.
