“Finally back home!”, the proud mother begins her message under the video that shows her hugging her son at the airport. ‘After a long journey I was able to hold my eldest son Jonas in my arms again. We picked him up with a whole welcoming committee.”
For two months, her son was on the other side of the world with his best friend Sam, but shared his adventures online every day. ‘Every day we could all look at their travelogue to all the filtered things they undertook together. I was left with heart failure,’ writes the concerned Trijntje. For example, she writes that her son made films for the home front while the boys were tearing along a ditch on ‘very bad road surface’ on worn-out mopeds.
Despite the fact that the family could enjoy every day, mama Trijntje only got a FaceTime moment once a week. “But that felt like a shot of life elixir that got me through the weeks.”
Trijntje ends her message with a sweet text for parents who recognize this and could use a heart under the belt. ‘Fellow parents… you probably recognize this, the indefinable feeling of emptiness when you have to miss your child for so long (what awaits us). But he went out into the world full of confidence and came back completely healthy and safe! I am VERY proud of him. But damn, how did I miss him!’
