Uruguay Launches Vaccination Campaign for Bovines Born in 2022 and 2023 to Combat Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Born in 2022 and 2023

Uruguay initiates a new instance of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease for bovines

Between June 15 and July 15, cattle born in 2022 and 2023 will be vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease, reported the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos. For this, the portfolio imported 5,000,000 doses. This “allows the health status to be maintained and access to the main international markets,” stressed the chief, at a press conference on June 14.

Together with the representatives of Livestock Services, Jorge Viera, and Animal Health, Martín Altuna, Mattos indicated that it is the second coverage for calves born in 2022 and 2023, and mentioned that the first was provided during the months of March and April, for the entire bovine herd of the country.

He also stressed that vaccination is mandatory by law and that this act is verified in the monitoring of viral circulation bleeding, through random samples in animals to check the immune level. The minister pointed out that solid protection in bovines maintains the health status of the national herd with respect to this disease and that inoculation allows access to international meat markets.

He also argued that the vaccine is provided by the aforementioned Secretary of State and that producers must submit an affidavit by June 30, 2022, the updated sanitary control form with the delivery form, a cooler with ice or refrigerant, and the amount of required dose.

Vaccination details

Due to the current epidemiological situation in the region —the last focus was detected in Paraguay in 2012—, inoculation of animals born in 2021 is considered unnecessary during this period. Those of 2022 and 2023 destined for slaughter may be mobilized with the vaccinations of the last period or the two previous ones. As of July 16, 2023, 10 days must have passed since they were inoculated with the dose corresponding to the June-July 2023 period.

Between June 15 and 25, these bovines are not allowed to be moved, and, from the 26th, only those born in 2022 and 2023, vaccinated at least 10 days in advance, may be. In addition, auctions at fairs and exhibitions, among others, are not authorized.

Mattos added that events with change of ownership that do not involve movement of animals (screen or virtual auctions) can be held within the period between June 15 and 25.
