Turkish President Blocks Sweden’s NATO Bid at July Summit: Report

The Turkish President said that Sweden should not expect much from the July summit of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Sweden, which wants to become a member of NATO, must take concrete steps to join the Alliance.

About it informs Hurriyet Daily News.

He made it clear that Turkey would not support Sweden’s NATO membership at the Vilnius summit on July 11-12.

“The fact that Sweden has certain expectations does not mean that we will meet these expectations. First of all, Sweden must fulfill its obligations in order for us to meet its expectations”– said the Turkish leader.

He added that amendments to the Constitution and the adoption of laws are not enough to effectively fight terrorism, and it is wrong to put pressure on Turkey in order to obtain approval for Sweden’s entry into NATO.

Erdogan noted that his position was announced to the representatives of Sweden, Finland and NATO during a meeting on June 14 in Ankara.

Recall that Turkey and Hungary remain countries that have not ratified Sweden’s application to join NATO. Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, has previously said that Sweden has met all the requirements for joining NATO, and expressed the hope that this will happen before the summit in Vilnius.

Earlier, we reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the condition under which the memorandum on Sweden’s accession to NATO would be approved by Ankara. According to the Turkish leader, he will be ready to give the “green light” to Sweden’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance as soon as official Stockholm extradites the terrorists.
