The Danish authorities are seeking to “strengthen their maritime potential” and “restrain” Russia’s activity in the Baltic Sea. This was stated by the chairman of the foreign policy committee of the country’s parliament, Mikael Ostrup Jensen, he is quoted by the publication Breaking Defense.
According to the official, the purchase of submarines is currently being discussed in order to “restrain” the activity of the Russian Federation in the Baltic Sea. He explained that all ships of the Russian Navy must pass through Danish waters if they leave St. Petersburg or Kaliningrad. “Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen our defense in depth, which is a new challenge for us,” Jensen said.
He also said that before the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Denmark spent about 1.35% of GDP on defense needs, but this year this spending will reach 2% of GDP.
Denmark got rid of its submarine fleet in 2004.
