National Council resolution: Volkshilfe: “The government is neither fighting child poverty nor inflation”

Basic child security would end child poverty in Austria.

Vienna (OTS)

Volkshilfe welcomes the fact that a further part of the promised measures to support certain groups of families affected by poverty are now to be decided in the National Council. In doing so, they are fulfilling further parts of their promises.

We have to keep in mind that this package, which was decided by the National Council, will neither end child poverty nor combat inflation“, emphasizes Erich Fenninger, Director of Volkshilfe Austria.

Erich Fenninger, who is currently cycling on the “353km Tour de Chance” from Vienna to Carinthia to point out 353,000 children affected by poverty, refers to the expertise of Volkshilfe in fighting poverty: “We know from our research that families affected by poverty are particularly affected by inflation Have challenges in the areas of housing, energy and food. The temporary two euros a day currently granted by the federal government can at best plug holes. The fact is that a single mother is burdened with around 180 euros a month due to the current price increases “.

So far, the government has not changed the level of the prices. Grocery companies and retail giants make excess profits, while poverty-stricken families can no longer make ends meet. Regulatory intervention is unavoidable when it comes to prices“Fenninger continued.

The rental price brake is also urgently needed, the next increases are imminent, warns Volkshilfe.

Combating child poverty through basic child security

353,000 children and young people in Austria are at risk of poverty and exclusion. “Every meter between Vienna and Carinthia there would be a child affected by poverty, so we want to show the unbelievable proportions that are,” reports Fenninger, who is currently cycling this distance with his team to draw attention to child poverty in Austria. “If the government really wants to combat child poverty, there is no way around basic child security“, concludes Fenninger.
