Man sentenced for inciting anti-Ukrainian flag protest at Prague museum

Yaroslav Popielka, who in mid-March called for the removal of the Ukrainian flag from the National Museum at an anti-government demonstration in Prague, was given a four-month suspended sentence.

He was also sentenced to one and a half years of probation. At the same time, he was banned from staying in Prague for 18 months.

Judge Eva Shwiglerova stated that Popelka tried to incite the crowd so that they all burst into the museum and thereby committed a crime.

The prosecutor said that Popelka incited the crowd to break into the building of the National Museum and remove the flag of Ukraine, which was hung in solidarity with the country facing Russian aggression.

Ashes position

Popelka told the court today that he and his group find it unacceptable to fly a foreign flag in the National Museum.

The symbol worries many, he says, and he linked efforts to remove it to his view that Ukraine was responsible for the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. He also expressed his intention to continue trying to remove the flag from the building. However, he stated that he did not want any violence.

The court gave him a suspended sentence and banned him from being in Prague for a year.
