Russia denounces treaty with Ukraine on Sea of Azov and Kerch Strait cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Russia’s denunciation of the treaty with Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. The relevant document was published today on the official website for legal information of Russia, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.

As indicated in the attached documents, with the acceptance into Russia of the so-called no. from Moscow to the Donetsk People’s Republic, to the Ukrainian Zaporozhye and Kherson Oblasts, the coasts of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait now belong only to Russia. In connection with the fact that Ukraine has lost its status as a coastal state in relation to these water areas, there has been a need to terminate the treaty, the documents also state.

The treaty between Russia and Ukraine was signed in Kerch on December 24, 2003. It stated the importance of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait for the economic development of both countries, as well as the need to preserve the Azov-Kerch water area as a complete economic and natural complex. In February, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine denounced all cooperation agreements with Russia in the Sea of Azov, TASS recalls.
