Novak Djokovic has clarified his future and commented on a possible retirement from tennis. He did so after winning his 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2023 Roland Garros. The Serb has surpassed Rafael Nadal and set a new record in men’s singles, also moving away from Roger Federer and now has his sights set on Wimbledon.
After his win over Casper Ruud, Djokovic said: “Obviously the journey isn’t over yet. I feel if I’m winning Grand Slams, why should I think about ending my career that has already been going on for 20 years.
So I still feel motivated, still inspired, to play the best tennis in those tournaments, you know, the Grand Slams. These are the ones that matter most in the history of our sport.
I’ve always compared myself to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal because these two are the biggest rivals I’ve ever had in my career. I’ve said this many times, they really defined me as a player and all the success I’ve had has helped because of the rivalries and the matches we’ve had.
Countless hours of thinking and analyzing and what it takes to win against them on the biggest stage, you know, for me and my team, it’s just been these two guys that have occupied my mind for the last 15 years.
It’s great to know that I have an advantage over both of them in the Grand Slams, over Rafa, but at the same time each one is writing their own story. But obviously the three of us, of course Andy too, who we can’t forget, we’ve reached what people like to call the golden age of men’s tennis over the last 20 years.
So I’m really grateful to be a part of this group of guys.”
Novak Djokovic gives important updates on his retirement
Novak Djokovic called the Roland Garros final one of the most important of his career: “One of the most important wins, obviously.
I knew that history was at stake today, but I tried to focus my attention and thought on preparing as best I could for this game to win, just like any other game.
I can’t say I didn’t think of it, but my team created a good bubble around me. And of course when I saw his forehand error I felt tremendous relief and was overcome with wonderful emotions. Yes, I am very happy and very proud.”
