The first user connected to the new ultra-broadband telecommunications network created by Open Fiber as part of the “1 Giga Italy Plan” is from Isola delle Femmine, on the outskirts of Palermo. The activation took place in Isola thanks to the partner operator Dimensione: the intervention lasted a few hours, allowing the customer to immediately benefit from cutting-edge connectivity thanks to the FTTH (Fiber-to-the- home) funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
“Isola delle Femmine is a fundamental stage in the growth path of Open Fiber – declares Simone Lo Nostro, director of the residential market of the company – which has been engaged for years in a complex and strategic country-project that aims to spread ultrabroadband connectivity in the country. Thanks to the commitment and determination put in place in recent months, we are pleased to kick off the marketing of services even in the so-called gray areas, thus further reducing the digital divide between the different areas of Italy”.
The “1 Giga Italy Plan” is part of the Italian strategy for ultra-broadband led by Infratel Italia, an in-house company of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy. Open Fiber was awarded a total of 8 tender lots, for a total of 3,881 municipalities in 9 regions: Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany and Veneto.
“Together with our customer-partners – continues Lo Nostro – we have launched a series of initiatives aimed at spreading and intensifying the adoption of the FTTH connection, a product which, in addition to bringing economic and performance advantages to those who use it, be they a private citizen or a company, also has a lower environmental impact than other types of connection and is therefore more in line with that culture of sustainability that we would all like to see play an increasingly important role within the dynamics of our purchasing or investment”.
With 13.5 million property units already connected to its new fiber network, Open Fiber is the main Italian operator of FTTH optical fiber and among the leaders in Europe. By virtue of its wholesale-only model, the company does not sell fiber optic services directly to the end customer, but places its infrastructure at the disposal of all interested operators.
The company’s overall plan, between private and public investment, is worth over 15 billion euros. To date, the ultra-fast connectivity on the network created by Open Fiber it is available in 240 cities and around 5,000 small municipalities. A few days ago, the first locations identified as part of the «1 Giga Italy Plan» which started at the end of last year, also appear in this list.
