WASHINGTON (Nettavisen): When Jens Stoltenberg met the Norwegian and Swedish press late on Monday evening before the meeting with President Joe Biden on Tuesday, many people wanted Stoltenberg’s comment on the recent Donald Trump indictment.
On Tuesday evening Norwegian time, Trump will appear in court in Miami, where he will be confronted with the charges.
Trump is indicted on 37 counts and 31 of the counts are related to secret and top-secret classified documents that he kept at home after he left the White House in early 2021. Several of the counts carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
Stoltenberg: – We have good routines
– As NATO chief, are you concerned about the content of the documents containing classified defense information about NATO countries found at Trump’s home?
– We have good routines for handling confidential material in NATO and between NATO countries. This has now become a matter of domestic politics in the United States and a matter for the legal apparatus here. And then it will be wrong if I get involved in that case, says Jens Stoltenberg to Nettavisen.

– So you don’t want to say anything about how serious it is that such documents are stored in this way?
– No, because it is a matter that goes before the legal apparatus here, and which has clear domestic political aspects, and then NATO should not become part of that discussion
– But this also has major foreign policy consequences?
– But, it’s just that, if I start to say something about this here, then both I and NATO will become part of a legal process in the USA. And a domestic political debate in the US, and we should not be part of that, says Stoltenberg.
– Are you worried that we will have a change of president in the United States at the next election, with a Republican president, in view of the support for NATO?
– I was and met the Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, here a few months ago, when I was here last. And I will meet the Congress tomorrow, and I am very confident that I will hear what I heard last time, that there is broad support from Republicans and Democrats to continue support for Ukraine, says Stoltenberg to Nettavisen.
