When relatives wanted to change her clothes for her funeral last Friday, Montoya suddenly started gasping for breath.
Intensive care
The doctors were quickly called in and came by to examine the 76-year-old woman. Montoya was then taken to hospital by ambulance, where she was placed in intensive care.
She is now in the same hospital where she was previously pronounced dead.
Cardiac arrest
Ecuador’s ministry has responded to the incident, stating that the woman would have gone into cardiac arrest earlier in the hospital. When Montoya failed to respond to CPR, she was pronounced dead moments later.
Her son, Gilber Rodolfo Balberán Montoya, was quoted by local media as saying his mother was “admitted around 9 am and in the afternoon a doctor told me she had died.”
