New Caledonian Political Personalities Attend UN Special Committee on Decolonization in New York

New Caledonian political personalities take part in the UN Special Committee on Decolonization in New York. An annual meeting, which takes place in a special context: it is the first time that the committee has met the different parties since the third “no” in the referendum, while the State continues to negotiate a future statute for the New -Caledonia. The elected officials present their vision of the last referendums, of the future and of the discussions in progress with the State.

The special committee on decolonization, the C24, meets again. After his regional seminar for the Pacific at the end of May 2023 in Bali, he organizes a new session to examine the situation in New Caledonia at the UN headquarters in New York earlier this week.

A few Caledonian elected officials made the trip to tell the Committee, once again, where the file stands from their point of view. Gil Brial is present as president for the Caledonian popular movement. The committee is well aware of its position. The leader of the Loyalists, Sonia Backès had come in person during the pandemic. Laura Vendegou of the Rassemblement-Les Républicains is also present.

Philippe Gomès, representative of Caledonia together, will ensure that the C24 hears another “sound of bell non-independence. The objective, for him, is that the committee finds that some who voted no to independence wish to do so in the most consensual negotiations possible.

FLNKS representative to the UN, Magalie Tingal-Lémé is also on site. Already present at the C24 seminar in Bali two weeks ago, it should reaffirm the positions of the separatists. If the third referendum can no longer be contested, she will repeat that its holding in December 2021, despite the separatists’ request for postponement, violated their right to self-determination. Magalie Tingal-Lémé should ask for her support from the C24 to mobilize the international community more broadly within the UN.
