Controversy Surrounding Media Content in UAE: Emirates Media Council Evaluates Circulating Content Contrary to Values and Principles of UAE

The Emirates Media Council confirmed that it is working to follow up and evaluate the media content circulating locally, indicating that it will not allow the circulation or publication of content contrary to the values and principles of the UAE, and the standards of media content in force in the country.

This came on the Council’s accounts on social networking sites yesterday.

The announcement of the release of the movie “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” (Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse) in theaters on June 22 sparked widespread controversy on social networking sites, after its users shared an image from the movie, which was shown in America, in the first week of this month, violates Islamic law and Arab values and customs, calling on the responsible authorities to take the necessary measures to protect society, and to protect future generations from exposure to such veiled messages that aim to implant ideas far from the values of Arab societies in their minds.

The movie “Light Year” sparked a similar controversy last year, and several Arab and Islamic countries refused to show it, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Disney had announced earlier that the company pledged to produce more controversial cartoon characters, according to the New York Post, and had also announced its refusal to delete any scenes from its films shown around the world.

Emirates Media Council:

“We are working on monitoring and evaluating the media content circulating locally.”

Tweeters called for taking the necessary measures to protect society, and to protect future generations from exposure to such implicit messages sent by work.
