Novak Djokovic: The Greatest Tennis Player of All Time and His Quest for a Calendar Grand Slam in 2021

Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud 7-6 (1) 6-3 7-5 in the Roland Garros final, making him the greatest tennis player of all time. The new world number one has passed his eternal rival Rafael Nadal in the battle for the most Grand Slam victories. However, Djokovic remains ambitious and he indicated that he wants to win all four majors this year. Never before has a tennis player in the Open Era (since 1968) won four Grand Slams in one year.

Djokovic was already very close to completing the Calendar Slam in 2021. Nole won the first three prestigious tournaments and reached the final at the US Open. He took on Daniil Medvedev, but Djokovic was no shadow of himself in that match. The three-time US Open winner succumbed to the pressure and tears flowed during the final change of sides. Medvedev beat Djokovic three times 6-4 to win his only Grand Slam to date.

Wimbledon

Djokovic told Tennis Channel and Sportskeeda that he hopes to get another chance at the Calendar Slam in New York. “Of course I have to win Wimbledon first and that is already a big task. It gives me a lot of confidence that I won the last four editions of Wimbledon and I like playing there. Wimbledon has always been my dream tournament.”

US Open

Djokovic was unable to participate in the US Open last year because he had not been vaccinated against the corona virus. The US entry rules for unvaccinated people expired on May 11, so the winner of 23 Grand Slam titles will be allowed back into the country. “If I win at Wimbledon, I would like to make history at the US Open.”

“I missed my fourth Grand Slam of the year against Medvedev in the final, but I felt the love from the New Yorkers and all the other people in the stadium. The audience gave me many emotions that day and I was overwhelmed by it. So I can’t wait to return to America and play at the US Open again,” said Djokovic.
