Pertamina Introduces New Bioethanol Fuel Product: Facts, Octane Equivalency, and Price Comparison

PT Pertamina (Persero) will launch a new fuel product in the near future. The product is bioethanol, where Pertamax will be mixed with 5% ethanol. Here are the facts:

• Has Octane Equivalent to Pertamax Plus

Pertamina Corporate Communication Vice President Fadjar Djoko Santoso said the name of the new product would be announced at the launch.

“That’s right, so Pertamax is mixed with 5% ethanol, so the octane goes up. For the product name, wait for the launch,” he told detikcom, Monday (12/6/2023).

Fadjar has not announced the launch date for the product. Even so, he said, this product will have a research octane number (RON) of 95. Pertamina itself previously had a product with RON 95, namely Pertamax Plus.

• The difference between New BBM and Pertamax Plus

Fadjar said, octane-wise, the new product was the same as Pertamax Plus. However, the new product has a different content from Pertamax Plus.

“Yes octanely, only the content is different,” he said.

He confirmed, the difference in the content in question was the presence of ethanol in the fuel. “Yes (Pertamax Plus does not use ethanol),” he said

Until now, Pertamina has not opened its voice regarding the price of this new fuel product. When asked whether the price was higher than Pertamax, Fadjar gave a leak. “The price is not yet, it seems yes,” he said.

Then, when asked whether the price would be lower than Pertamax Turbo, namely the fuel with the highest octane that Pertamina sells, namely 98, Fadjar could not provide any information.

For your information, the price of Pertamax in Jakarta and its surroundings is IDR 12,400 per liter. Meanwhile, the price of Pertamax Turbo is IDR 13,600 per liter.
