“Dreamed of” has been the motto for the Weinviertel Spartans footballers since Sunday. The Mistelbacher would have needed a win in their last game of the season to keep alive the chance of a place in the Division II playoffs. In the end, however, they were far from it, the game at the Blue Hawks ended in a bitter 0:35 defeat. What chairman Florian Kosel itched a little: “The result was very clear, but personally I didn’t find the difference that big in terms of play.”
The Spartans also had a big handicap that day: Quarterback Matthias Potmesil was unable to play in the decider. Lukas Koch stepped into the breach for him. The 25-year-old usually acts as a wide receiver, but he’s also a backup quarterback and this time tried to throw the balls instead of catching them. “He didn’t do that badly at all,” said Kosel, for whom the lack of movement on offense was nevertheless visible. And because there was a problem going forward, the defense had to come on the field again and again, which seemed more and more tired as the game progressed. So a 0-0 after the first quarter turned into the clear defeat mentioned.
The Eagles had presented ideally
It was all the more bitter because the Pannonia Eagles had helped out on Saturday, the tail light defeated the Ebenfurth Mustangs 21:20. The Spartans couldn’t capitalize on their rival’s slip and will finish Conference B in third place.
The record of four wins and four defeats is still a big step forward for the Spartans. “For the first time in several years, we have at least no negative balance,” emphasizes the chairman, “and we see the potential that more would have been possible. I’m just saying messed up game with the Eagles and away with the Mustangs.”
The will to do even better next season is all the greater: “We want to take another step forward, which logically has to be called play-offs.”
First, however, there is still some loose training and a toast to the season at a big graduation ceremony together with the youth. There is a break in July and August.
