“I’m lying in bed and moaning,” laughs Leishkalns, when called by phone. On June 10, at around nine in the evening, he walked across Dzirnavu street near Galerijas Rīga and hit a car, the driver of which was driving in reverse at the time. Although the speed was not high, Uldis fell painfully to the knees, but the driver, not seeing him, continued driving for a while.
“I started yelling in my operatic voice, then he stopped,” says Leishkalns. He admits that he crossed the street in the wrong place, so probably both are to blame. Policemen happened to be nearby, besides Uldi’s acquaintances, who joked – well, singer, you have fallen low. The “papers” have been written, and Leishkaln will also have to give his explanation to the police.
Emergency medical assistance was also called, and Uldis was taken to the “beaches”. “I was put on a board, my head was fixed, I couldn’t move for three hours. But there were cool nurses in the hospital, with humor, I sang to them – “Let me mourn and shed tears,” Uldis laughs. After midnight he was released from the hospital, he had to go home by taxi. The legs are bruised, one has a cut skin, but otherwise nothing terrible.
Nor is it the case that Leishkalns is just healing his wounds at home – the very next evening he performed at “Lido” on Krasta Street. And happiness in misfortune – before this misfortune, Uldis ordered new pants. The ones I wore on the day of the accident did not tear, but they were no longer clean, and the new ones came just in time.
