Slovak hockey forward Tomáš Tatar from the New Jersey Devils club in the overseas NHL found himself in a difficult situation. His contract with the “Devils” is ending and he has not yet signed a new one.
According to Nick Villan of the Pucks and Pitchforks portal, the 32-year-old winger may receive a new contract, but it is also possible that his time in Newark will end.
“It’s complicated with him because of different performances in different stages of the season. It seemed that he deserved a new contract with his performances in the regular season, but in the playoffs, he apparently prepared himself for it. Can the Devils offer Tatar such conditions to stay?” Villano asked. He points out that the club cannot afford to pay him the 4.5 million per year that he received in the last two seasons. In New Jersey, they have to think about the fact that they need to sign other players as well.
It is also questionable whether Tatar will be willing to play for less money. “He’s 32 years old, so it’s probably not realistic. They also won’t give him more because they have limited cap space. Also, Tatar has only scored one point in the last 12 games. After a good regular season, the team should want to keep Tatar, but he prepared for a higher salary in the playoffs. It looks like he will be a free agent, but that does not rule out his continuing in New Jersey. If another club does not want him, he can accept a lower salary.” thinks Villano.
