BERN – Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan took fifth place in Monday’s second stage of the Round of Switzerland race.

Eritrean Biniam Girmay from the Intermarché-Circus-Wanty team triumphed in the final sprint. Frenchman Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) finished second and Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) was third. The home team of Stefan Küng kept the yellow jersey of the leader of the running order.

On Monday, there was a 174 km long undulating stage from Beromünster to Nottwil. Thirty kilometers before the finish, there was a huge crash of several dozen competitors, only about 20 riders remained in front and huge differences were created. The Oberarig hill (3.3 km, 4.8%) followed, several cyclists did not return to the peloton.

Sagan managed this section without problems, riding in front and preparing for a sprint. Three kilometers before the finish, van Aert was in front, but at the end Girmay was the fastest. In addition to the first three, the Czech Pavel Bittner from DSM also got ahead of the Slovak.

“When I crossed the finish line, I was surprised and excited. After two months since the fall in Flanders, I trained well and slowly got into shape. It’s amazing that I managed to do it like this. I’m also happy for the fans who came here and they support me a lot. But I can’t fully celebrate with them, because the race has only just started.” the specialized portal cycling-info.sk quoted Girmaya.

On Tuesday, the 143.8 km long hilly 3rd stage from Tafers to Villars-sur-Ollon awaits the cyclists.
