Ministry of Health Urges Filling 131 Vacant MIR Positions in Family and Community Medicine

The extraordinary appeal made by the Ministry of Health to cover the 202 MIR positions in Family and Community Medicine that were left empty in the first round ended yesterday, leaving 131 vacancies in eight communities, the majority in Galicia and Castilla y León.

Of these vacant positions, 39 corresponded to Galicia, which after the new appeal has only managed to cover 6, so another 33 positions remain vacant.

Most of these deserted plazas are found in rural and isolated areas, which are less attractive to MIRs. Thus, there are still 19 vacancies in the Lugo health area, 13 in Ourense and one in Ferrol.

From the Department of Health they emphasize, however, that despite these 33 vacancies this will be the year with the most Family residents in health centers: a total of 174, which means 38 more than last year. This is explained by the significant increase in MIR positions in the 2023 call.

Despite this, the Xunta “greatly regrets” that there are empty positions “at a time when there is an evident deficit of professionals in this specialty.” For this reason, it once again calls on the Ministry of Health to change the system for allocating MIR places.

Thus, Family and Community Medicine, which for the second consecutive year has not been able to fill the places offered, is the only specialty that has not been completed in this call, in which it leaves 131 vacancies, most of which are concentrated in Castilla and León (40) and Galicia (33).

With less than half is Extremadura (16); Aragon (15) and Navarra (14), followed by Catalonia (8); Cantabria (4) and Asturias (1). La Rioja has managed to cover the two empty squares that remained in the first round.

The people who have already been awarded their place will take possession of the corresponding center or teaching unit between May 22 and 23, 2023.
