Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor to Address “Barcelonagate” and Gold Bullion Cases in Strasbourg

Chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev will speak in Strasbourg about the “Barcelonagate” cases and about those photos of Boyko Borisov with the gold bars, which the former prime minister says were arranged. This was announced by the state prosecution.

Barcelonagate is being investigated for money laundering. The subject of the case is a house in Barcelona where the model Borislava Yovcheva and her daughter lived. The property cost 4 million euros. The means with which it was purchased are checked.

Here is the full statement from the prosecutor’s office:

The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria Ivan Geshev will be on a working visit to the European Parliament in the city of Strasbourg, France, on June 13 and 14, 2023. The reason for the visit is an invitation to the Prosecutor General to participate in an extraordinary meeting of the Monitoring Group for Democracy, Supremacy of Law and Fundamental Rights to LIBE (DRFMG) of the European Parliament.

At the request of the MEPs, Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev will present the progress achieved by the PRB in investigating cases of corruption at the “highest levels” of power, as well as specific cases of interest to the Monitoring Group – the so-called the Barcelonagate and Gold Bullion cases.

Representatives of GRECO – the Group of States fighting against corruption at the Council of Europe, which monitors the practices of counteracting and uncovering corruption crimes at the “highest levels” of power, are also scheduled to take part in the meeting.

On June 14, 2023, working meetings of the Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev with members of the European Parliament are planned.
